April 26, 2006 ~ Dinner at China Garden Restaurant, 1100 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA with Dean Dick Dubanoski, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Alumni Association Southern Spring Tour.
May 27, 2006 ~ NCRC Board of Governors meeting in the Fifth Floor Conference Room, McEnearney Associates, Inc., 510 King Street, Alexandria, VA (MAP) starting at 8:30 a.m. (510 King Street is just around the corner from 109 South Pitt Street). There is parking under the building – entrance on South Pitt Street. Metered parking on the street is 25 cents for 20 minutes; maximum the meter will take is 2 hours ($1.50). Be forewarned, the City of Alexandria does enforce parking regulations.
June 9, 2006 ~ Dinner at Indigo Landing (off the GW Parkway south of National Airport) with UH President Dave McClain, Jim Gaines, VP for Research and Dan Ishii, AVP for Research. In addition to NCRC members the event was attended by Myron and Carol Hayashida and Jo Hodgin of Wolftrap.
June 16, 2006 ~ Thanks to the corporate contributors and the golfers who played in the Ninth Annual Aloha Scholarship Charity Golf Tournament at the Virginia Oaks Golf Club in Gainesville, VA [ MAP ]. It was a lovely sunny day. Former intern Leilani Takeuchi spoke with enthusiasm and gratitude as she recalled her experiences in 2001, reminding all that the main purpose of the golf tournament is to raise scholarship money for the Intern Program. September 9, 2006 ~ Face of America: Hawai’i, a Hawaiian cultural evening at Wolf Trap National Park featuring Halau O Kekuhi, Keali’i Reichel and Ledward Kaapana in addition to spectacular video footage of the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. “Bring your own” dinner in the Meadow [MAP] at 6:00 p.m.; dessert provided by NCRC with UH President David McLain at 7:15; performance at 8:00p.m.. November 5, 2006 ~ Karen and Dan welcomed our 2006 Interns at a Curry Stew Dinner party at 5:00 PM. The UH Interns arrived at Dulles International Airport on Wednesday, August 30, 2006. This year’s interns are Kyle Kikuchi, Sarah Myhre, Barron Oda, and Elizabeth West . They are staying at The Meridian at Courthouse Commons, 1410 North Scott Street, Arlington, VA 22209. The Interns attended the Face of America: Hawai’i performance on September 9th. Karen Uemoto and Dan Lehman hosted them at a farewell chili supper on Tuesday, December 12th. We bid the Interns Aloha as they departed for home on Friday, December 15, 2006.
Penny Garrett-Toma, beloved wife of Takeshi “Take” Toma, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2006 at the Virginia Hospital Center. A lovely Memorial Service was held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at Cherrydale Bible Church. In lieu of Flowers, the family suggested contributions be made to the PENNY GARRETT-TOMA Memorial Fund at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, 2650 South Arlington Mill Drive, Arlington, VA 22206.
